What is the Houston SPCA and what do you do? The Houston SPCA, founded in 1924, is Houston’s first and largest animal protection organization and shelter. Our mission is to promote commitment to and respect for all animals and free them from suffering, abuse and exploitation. We provide the most comprehensive array of animal adoption, shelter, rescue, rehabilitation and other programs and services in the Gulf Coast area.
Where are you located? We are located at 900 Portway Drive, Houston, TX 77024.
How do I adopt? The Houston SPCA is open for adoption Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
How do I surrender an animal? Admissions are by appointment only, seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. We do charge a nominal fee to admit an animal to the shelter.
Where can I see all the adoptable animals? All of our adorable adoptable animals are featured on our website which is updated in real time.
What do you consider an “owned” animal? If you have been confining and caring for an animal for 14 days or more on your property, we consider that animal to be your property and not a stray.
Can you guarantee that my pet will be adopted? No. We do our best and proudly place 100 percent of our healthy animals into loving new homes. But we cannot guarantee placement if your pet develops medical or behavioral issues after being accepted into our adoption program.
What if I change my mind and want my pet back? If you leave your animal with us you will sign a contract relinquishing ownership and all rights to that animal. There is no remorse period and we will not contact you regarding final disposition.
How do I adopt a horse or farm animal? The first step is to complete the online application.
How do I volunteer? The Houston SPCA has hundreds of volunteers who dedicate their time to make a difference in the lives of our shelter animals and our community. You can join our team.
How do I get a job with the Houston SPCA? We have a variety of positions available. Applications must be submitted online.
Will you pick up an uninjured stray animal? Please contact the tax-funded, municipal animal control agency for your jurisdiction.
Do you accept stray animals? We do accept stray animals by appointment only. If you require immediate assistance, please contact the tax-funded municipal animal control agency for your jurisdiction.
Do you receive tax dollars? No. The Houston SPCA is a private non-profit charity that receives no tax dollars or funding from the government.
Does the Houston SPCA euthanize animals? We place 100 percent of our healthy animals into loving new homes. No animal is ever euthanized at the Houston SPCA to make room for incoming animals or for time limits.
