Foster Home Care Program

What is Fostering? A foster home temporarily houses and cares for an animal until he/she is ready to come back for adoption.

Why do we have a Foster Program? The Houston SPCA receives many animals that for various reasons can not immediately go up for adoption at the time of admission.  Some are too young. Others may be ill or injured.  An additional program is in place for animals that have been at the shelter too long and need a break from shelter life.

How long does it take to foster? Depending on the situation, a foster commitment could be anywhere from 7-10 days or as long as 6-8 weeks.

How do I join? Turn in a completed Foster Application which is available via this website, or in the Houston SPCA lobby.  Upon approval of the application, you will be asked to attend a one-time, two-hour foster orienation held monthly on Saturdays.

What can I foster?  The Houston SPCA Foster Program has a wide variety of animals available to foster.  This includes dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, gerbils andguinea pigs, as well as horses, pigs, goats cows and other farm animals.

What does the Houston SPCA provide?  The Houston SPCA provides medical care, vaccinations, spay/neuter surgery, crates and linens.  Hill's Science Diet currently provides food for cats and dogs.

Fostering is a wonderful, rewarding experience. Not to mention life-saving!
