The Humane Education/Character Education Connection
As more parents and educators recognize the need for character education in the classroom, studies show that children first identify and internalize the values of respect, good citizenship and compassion in an animal-focused context. Our Humane Education Department at the Houston SPCA presents lessons that address empathy, responsibility and respect for animals, each other and our community.
According to the National PTA Congress,
| "Children trained to extend justice, kindness and mercy to animals become more just, kind and considerate in their relations with each other. Character training along these lines will result in men and women of broader sympathies, more humane, more law-abiding—in every respect, more valuable citizens.” |
We offer these lessons free to classes in the Greater Houston area. We can adjust any of these topics to meet the needs of 2nd through 12th graders.
