Facilities Maintenance Assistant (Texas, Houston)

Nature & Scope: The position?s primary responsibilities include a wide variety of activities to be performed within assigned standard procedures which may involve decision making between several standard alternatives. The position will routinely provide information or services within the organization; work independently on general assignments, and refers all unusual problems to the supervisor.

Experience: Entry level position. Experience in general maintenance work helpful, but not required. Or any combination of education and experience which demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Ability to:

Animal Rescue Technician (Texas, Houston)

The Houston SPCA is currently seeking an Animal Rescue Technician to join our dedicated animal rescue team. Want to join a dedicated team of professionals who assist the community by responding to calls regarding injured and distressed animals? The Houston SPCA is the only agency in our area providing an injured animal rescue service 24 hours a day 365 days a year.

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Respond to service calls to assist injured animals or animals in distress within the service area of the Houston SPCA.
  • Prioritize calls and make judgment calls for responding to animals needing assistance based on Houston SPCA protocols and directives issued by the Houston SPCA Command Staff.
  • Establish control and capture of all types of animals in a variety of health and temperaments, including fractious animals and animals in hazardous environments.
  • Report observed health or behavior issues to the appropriate staff on duty.
  • Maintain assigned equipment, supplies and vehicles in safe condition and report any problems or needed repairs to the Animal Care Manager or Supervisor.

Relief Veterinary Technician (Texas, Houston)

Essential Functions of the Relief Veterinary Technician Position:

  • Relief Veterinary Technician works under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian or contracted veterinarian with the Houston SPCA.
  • Relief Veterinary Technician is responsible for proper animal handling.
  • Care for, feed, water, monitor, medicate and perform minor treatment on animals.
  • Responsible for vaccinating animals that come into the shelter or need updated vaccinations.
  • Draw blood and perform diagnostic testing including, but not limited to heartworm testing, fecal testing, skin scraping, FIV and FIV testing.
  • Assure that injured animals receive proper and timely treatment.
  • Maintain assigned equipment, supplies and vehicles in safe condition and report any problems or needed repairs to the Director of Animal Services or Veterinary Services Supervisor.
  • Review charts, collect vital statistics and assist Veterinarian during surgery and exams.

Veterinary Nurse Supervisor (Texas, Houston)

Primary Purpose:

Responsible for assisting the Animal Services Director with all clerical and office duties, along with the coordination and supervision of the Veterinary Nurse Team at the Houston SPCA. Work inter-departmentally to create and maintain efficient and logistical processes that result in movement, acquisition and resolution of all campus companion animals.

Essential Functions of the Position:

  • Assure that routine examinations and treatments of shelter animals are properly performed as required.
  • Monitor the Houston SPCA care of animals and reports any discrepancies to the Animal Care Director.
  • Instruct, train and assist staff with their duties, use of equipment, and materials in assigned areas.
  • Quality control of all procedures.
  • Coordinate investigation/cruelty seizures with all key departmental stakeholders.
  • Assist Chief Veterinarian & Director of Care Services in creating and adhering to budgetary constraints.
  • Maintain veterinary services product inventory and order supplies as needed.
  • Assist staff with initial customer questions and/or issues in a timely manner.

  • Responsible for ensuring accurate information regarding customers and animals are in the database.
  • Update Chief Veterinarian & Animal Services Director on areas of interest and/or concern.
  • Reconcile reports and controlled drug logs.
  • Track and communicate rabies lab test submissions and results with key stakeholders
  • Coordinate laboratory procedures and examinations as necessary.

  • Assure that all holding areas, treatment animal housing spaces, and work stations are maintained in a clean, organized manner at all times.

Our hospital is equipped with modern diagnostic equipment for triaging injured animals from the eight counties that make up the Greater Houston area. We have digital radiography, ultrasound, and in-house laboratory equipment. Our campus now has a brand new Adoption Center, Wildlife Center, Education building, and a new barn and arena. Veterinarians at the Houston SPCA also participate as clinicians for the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine in their Animal Welfare and Shelter Medicine rotation.

Finally, the veterinarians at the Houston SPCA play a vital role in our ongoing mission to eliminate animal cruelty. They ensure that animals are cared for medically and rehabilitated, and their expert witness testimony can bring justice for the innocent victims of animal cruelty, abuse and neglect.

Our compensation package is extremely competitive; ranging from $115,000 - 130,000 per year.
