The Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Houston SPCA) was established in 1924, and is one of the leading animal rescue and protection organizations in the country. We help more nearly 45,000 animals each year, including cats and dogs; horses and farm animals; small pets, native wildlife and even exotics. We are a private, non-profit charity, funded entirely by donations, and receives no funding from the government, United Way or other animal groups.

The Houston SPCA is open for adoptions Monday through Thursday from noon to 7 p.m. and Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. No appointment needed. We consider an animal that has been in your care for more than 14 days as an owned animal.
We only rescue injured animals with our 24-hour rescue ambulance. Both the city and county utilize tax dollars to pick up uninjured strays.
We encourage people to take stray animals to the appropriate animal control agency for their area. We do rescue injured unowned animals through our 24-hour injured animal rescue ambulance service. If you see an injured, trapped, distressed, or orphaned animal, please call 713-880-HELP.
No, we rely solely on donations and do not receive funds from any other animal welfare organization.

All of our adoptable animals are featured in real time on our website. If the animal you are interested in is still featured, he or she is still available for adoption. All adoptions are on a first-come basis by appointment only. Due to the high volume of requests we receive, we are unable to maintain a “match” list nor can we hold an animal for a potential adopter.
The Rehoming Center is open by appointment only seven days a week from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. There is a $10 non-refundable, appointment fee and appointments are subject to availability. Please note, we do not humanely euthanize animals for space or at the end of a certain time period. Appointments cannot be made online, so please call (713) 869-7722 between 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM for scheduling.
